What, then, are we to do in the face of such a monumental, heart-wrenching catastrophe?
The Presbytery of East Tennessee is sponsoring several work trips to the area hit by Hurricane Katrina (probably expanded to include the Hurricane Rita-damaged areas). Learn more here, including application information.
Initial expenses were met by allocating $500,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing offerings, but a call for an additional $10 million has been issued because of the great need. Fundraising costs have been met for 2005; 100% of your gift will go toward disaster relief. Your gift is important!
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance updates its website frequently as do the two synods that are most affected. Links to these are HERE.

Money is the most needed gift, but other gift information is now available.
Added on Sept 14: Personal Health Kits/Hope in a Box Kits are no longer needed. The warehouse is full. If you have assembled kits that are not yet mailed, follow the link to get suggestions as to who could still use them; if you still want to assemble kits, the article suggests another kits for which the need is ongoing.
PRAY:
Please pray for the people who are in such distress, those offering assistance in these areas, and for those who are sending assistance from elsewhere.

GIVE:
At this time Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has issued a call to raise $10 million.
"100% of all donations will be used as the donors have designated as Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has met the maximum contribution for shared mission costs for gifts received in 2005."
(What this means is that PDA joins with other mission areas in fund-raising and they share in the costs of that effort. PDA has met its obligations in this regard for 2005 so all donations will be used for the work that each donor designates; i.e., here, for Katrina relief.)
Gifts by check to DR000169 (the accounting number assigned to Hurricane Katrina relief) may be given through your local Presbyterian congregation or mailed to Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), 100 Witherspoon Street, Louisville, KY 40202-1396. Please include the designated giving account number on your check. Credit card donations to U.S. Hurricane Response DR000169 can be made online or by calling PresbyTel at 800-872-3283.
