I. General Resources for parents

  • Family Communications offers ideas for Early Childhood Education, Parent & Professional resources, and maintains the information on the PBS show, Mr Rogers' Neighborhood. Professionals who worked with "Mr Rogers" during his lifetime continue his vision and work on this site. (Fred Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian pastor from Pittsburgh PA whose life ministry was to serve children and their parents.)

  • The American Library Association, the website for professional librarians, offers booklists for all ages. Their Born to Read pamphlet suggests ways to encourage a love of reading from infancy through the school years.
II. Toddler-Preschool Years
  • The TV network Discovery Kids offers educational resources to supplement their popular children's shows. Parents may choose what resources they wish to make available to their children; many are the "print and take with you" type rather than requiring the child to actually use the computer.
  • Similar material is available from PBS (public television); resources also include parenting help and assistance in preparing children for school.
III. Kindergarten-Elementary School Years

    • Math-and-Reading-Help-for-Kids actually offers help in all subjects with articles listed by subject and on such topics as "How to Get Along with a Difficult Teacher." (Note: the "Topics" list down the page center is a pay-for-service feature, but most of this site is free.

  • Reading Comprehension
    • Tips for helping students struggling with understanding what they are reading are offered by professionals at About Education.
  • Social Studies
    • Sheppard Software produces and sells educational software to schools, but they have produced many educational games that can be played online. They are especially well-known for their games that teach geography. A list is HERE; for starters, students from the 4th grade through high school will find their "Place the State" game stimulating and challenging because each time the game is played an entirely new sequence of states is generated.
